The
first and second round was just standing.
Nobuhiro Obiya, with his senior mentor, Takanori
Gomi, has been practicing at a karate dojo called
Bushin juku and apparently what he learned there was a sharp
low kick and with this new weapon, Obiya initiated early.
But Ryan Bow is a smart fighter and knew
that this is an "away match" for him so he also
countered it with striking. It was obvious that Ryan had more
power in each shot, and with his one right straight Obiya's
left eye was a meatball. But just like he said after the fight,
he was being too cautious, "looking" too
much at the opponent.
In the second round Obiya's hooks to the body and left kick
to the midsection cornered Bow, "He was on top of
my guard but it didn't give a good impression to the judges."
Finally in the third round Bow changes his strategy.
He shot in and took the fight to the ground, and it became
a seesaw battle. Bow took the back a few times and went for
an armbar but Obiya also landed a few fists from Bow's half-guard.
The crowd really got into it at this point.
At the last minute of the fight, Obiya screamed and went for
a judo throw but Bow defended this well, instead taking the
back, and started to land a series of punches to Obiya's head.
But Obiya was saved by the bell.
He was in a danger at the end of the fight but all three judges
scored more points to Obiya, and a unanimous decision was
announced.

Obiya, with a swollen
eye, battled through and captured DEEP lightweight title. |
Obiya, after winning rookie of the year in Shooto, left Gutsman
Shooto dojo, took a year off, then joined Kiguchi Dojo, made
a comeback at the DEEP Future King Tournament. From that day
Obiya has "not even a day, I never forget about the
DEEP belt." He is planning on capturing the DEEP
title as end of his first chapter.
Now there is a high possibility that his stage in the second
chapter is going to be PRIDE. In the ring, he told fans, "As
a representative of Japan, and a representative of DEEP, I
will fight a stronger fighter" and that could mean that
he is moving up. Obiya was always know for putting up a good
fight so we can expect to see him fight in that same white
mat as Gomi very soon.
DEEP almost couldn't come up with an opponent for Satoko
Shinashi but at the end, the promotion squeezed out
a special match with no punches to the head on the ground,
against Shiho Yamato from Zendo-kai Hiroshima
branch.
Shinashi dominated from the beginning. Went for a heel lock,
a rear naked choke, and an armbar but somehow Yamato escaped
so fans went wild, but at the end Shinashi's second armbar
attempt sealed the deal.
Although DEEP came up with Shinashi's opponent, the promotion
couldn't come up with appropriate gloves for the Milton
Vieira and Kazunori Yokota fight.
DEEP ordered an open finger glove with a bow that tightens
around the wrist but the gloves they got on the day of the
fight didn't have a bow.
So during this fight, more than a few times, the referee had
to intervene in the fight to fix the gloves. And at one point,
it took nearly three minutes to fix Vieira's glove. It must
have been quite frustrating for the fighters because it sure
was for the fans.
In this fight, Vieira took the back went for an armbar at
the end of the first round, but Yokota also landed a few punches
from half-mount position. The second round was almost even.
Maybe a slight edge to Vieira because he took Yokota's back
a few times initiating more attacks but all three judges called
it a draw.
