The
screen opens with, the last remaining snow flurries blowing
by a window, outside you see children with shovels and sleds,
hats and gloves and as their shrieks and laughter follow them
down the road a snow ball is thrown at a passing car. They’re
enjoying themselves because these are the times of their lives.
Upon returning home, there’s Mother serving the warm dinner,
and leisure time spent playing cards. How was your day son?
How was your day Dad?
There
is no unhappiness where the love for fashion exists. The new
movie starring Takanori Gomi as the gentle rebellious self-taught,
self stylized, judo fighting teen with a passion for kicking
ass. We witness this young man turning from a child into a
young man. Relinquishing his teachings of Buddhism to become
a rebellious lightweight fighter in the MMA stage, and the
effect it has had on his wardrobe.
In this semi autobiographical drama, one thing the critics
have noted is his ability to calm his opponents in the ring,
this is a modern day children’s story and Buddhist teachings
have served him well, this has turned into a made for TV teen
drama. Not only is it about this fighter but about this fighters
struggle with his fashion sense. Takanori is a young man,
fighting his way to the top with a crippling inability to
find the right outfit (enter soundtrack recording of Against
All Odds).
In the first frame we see him, tearing his room apart searching
for something to wear, he resolves himself to wearing his
pumpkin trimmed valor tracksuit. Ooh bad choice...... he had
just bought it at the mall under the influence of his best
friend Genki, we know Genki can get down in the Geisha girl
outfits, but even he had made a bad call. Between fights Takanori
is caught in yet another dilemma. The desire to be a street
fighting rebel in camouflage pants and a dumpy T. Apparently,
if he pouts long enough he’s sure to look tough.
In
the next clip we see his counselor, coaching him in the ways
to look tough and how to box bare fisted, this segment is
a little unbelievable, considering it’s content is how to
make a fist. Although they’re touching dying the hair blonde
scene, could be up for an Oscar! (Insert Jpg #4) The standard
zip up sweat suit is in full bloom and, well thank god it’s
not the pumpkin jump suit.
By the end of the film Takanori has resolved many mistakes
and comes out a changed man, a pro fighter, with a sense of
style, here seen at the movies premier.
I am sure a lot of you regular readers of my column had wished
I worked on this movie.
Cause first of all who’s plucking whose eyebrows? And even
the sense of style the wardrobe department imposed upon him
is well...bad.
In real life I hope Takanori, has had a chance to go shopping.
Some things he might consider, let your hair go back to natural,
grow it out a little longer. You look great in suits and when
going casual a little camouflage goes a long way, you want
to stand out in the crowd not blend in! Try on some sunglasses
for the movie star effect and how about a nice black leather
jacket? After all you are a shooting star in the ring and
quite possibly some day in the movies! Pass the popcorn.
